Dancing lights behind clouds

Had a slumber party with a friend and my siblings. Oldest person at the scene who was still only a teenager called us outside to look. Above the sky to the east over the trees saw between 8 and a dozen lights larger than a full moon, glowing behind the clouds. They were twirling around each other in circular formations. Did it for a while and then slowly the lights started to spread out their formation and the entire thing drifted north , keeping up the same 'dance' until they were out of sight.
