Two lights rose over the back of the car, shot into the sky, displayed a series of colored lights, jumped around, then disappeared

In the late fall of 1978 I was sitting in a parked car in front of my apartment building, when my friend and I both noticed a pair of very bright lights shining through the rear window of the car. My friend and I were deciding who would get out and ask the driver to turn down their headlights, when, to our amazement, the lights rose up, flew over the roof of the car, and went up into the air high above. The two lights turned into a row of colored lights that were moving back and forth among themselves. Then the lights all become one light and started moving in various directions at odd angles within a fairly confined area. Then the "thing' disappeared altogether.

I never saw the object, I only saw the lights - first two, then a line in the sky overhead.

This is my whole report. The person who saw it with me was so upset he never spoke with me again.
