Cigar shaped craft low altitude filled the entire sky

My husband and I were stationed at Fort Knox after returning from serving in Vietnam. We lived off base in a house. While taking the dog for a walk before heading to bed I walked outside. It was eerily quite, I looked up and all the stars were missing, in their place was a massive cigar shaped craft. It was so low to the ground maybe 700 ft up. It was dark metallic and it had huge bay doors that looked like glass. The silhouettes of very large people could be seen as well as large shadows of objects possibly smaller craft in some of the windows, the windows were rectangular and I estimateit at 50ft high. I ran up the stairs and screamed for my husband who was in bed, he ran down the stairs in his underwear, I pointed to the sky and right as he got his head through the door the craft took off in one fast move and was completely gone. The entire sky was back. The craft made zero noise at all. The airforce base next door and 911 received 100s of calls. The news the next morning and radio had callers calling in to talk about it. The base said it was not their craft or training exercise. For a week everyone in town talked about it, it had to have been seen by 100s or 1000s of people. I am reporting it because I see no record of this report in any database but it was widely seen and talked about. There was a big incident that happened in the 40s at the base also.
