3 sets of 3 orangy flickering flying objects completely quiet and in perfectly spaced apart from one another. then they disappeared.

12/21/2012 I was in my house and my partner pounded on my front door to get me to come outside. I went outside and looking towards the south I saw 3 groupings of 3 orange flickering flying objects in the sky. They moved slow and gracefully across the sky in the northwest direction, there was no sound at all, helicopter size yet oblong and not the shape of helicopter, flying low like about the height of the hills nearby. Each group of 3 flying objects were spaced apart the exact same way perfectly. After watching them for about 1 minute they all sort of just faded out at the same time. It was 10:06pm when it was done.
