4 red lights, rectangle, flying slowly west to east over Wolverhampton

Viewed from Sandford Rise, Wolverhampton, 4 solid red lights flying in a rectangular formation, approaching from the south west, flying quite slowly almost directly overhead and continuing north east in perfect formation, until disappearing into the distance over some houses. When roughly overhead, a low rumbling like a distant large aircraft could be heard until they disappeared into the distance.

Other aircraft (commercial planes etc) were in the sky, though I'd say these lights were higher up from the angle as they flew into the distance.

First thought is that they were military craft on some sort of training exercise.
