While driving southwest on I-88, we saw the western sky illuminate as if cloud-cloud lightning, but sky was clear and temp was in the 30s. The area illuminated had to be 10s of miles in length. No sound, no other lights.

I am a scientist and could not determine an earth based cause for this--could it have been a meteorite burning as it entered the atmosphere?
