Fast moving lights splitting off and converging again

My wife and I were going for an after dinner walk, admiring the stars. I spotted a light that appeared to be moving slowly over the horizon just north of town. The light began moving vertically and I thought it must be a plane, then it suddenly moved a huge distance in a couple of seconds.

It started moving at an approximate 45 degree angle and slowed.

Another light appeared to split off and move away from the original light. Then another light split off and did the same thing. This lasted for about 2 minutes.

The objects appeared to come back together and start moving vertically again.

It eventually disappeared from sight.
