Extremely loud mechanical popping sounds, solid orange light moving across night sky at alarming rate.

I was taking garbage out in my backyard on September 2, 2012 at approximately 21:00 hours. When I suddenly heard a series of very loud “popping” sounds, similar to the sound fireworks make, but with a more mechanical almost engine-like sound to them. This sound sparked my curiosity, and I went into my back yard to see if I could see any fireworks going off, as this was the only logical explanation I could think of, even though this weekend is not one where fireworks are traditionally set off in Canada.

There were no fireworks seen, which was surprising as from the volume of the strange mechanical popping sounds, they would have to have been nearby, and therefore in my eyesight. While searching the sky for fireworks, I spotted a single bright orange solid glowing light travelling across the sky at a very fast rate. Assuming it was a meteor, or a comet I continued to watch it fly across the night sky, expecting it to fall or burn out during the time I could see it. The mysterious light did not fall or burn out, and appeared to be ascending into the sky just as it was getting out of view.
