This occurred on Memorial Day weekend 2010 on a Halibut fishing charter in Prince Williams Sound. We arrived @ Smith Island approx. 9 AM. We anchored and finally began fishing on the East side of the Southern tip of Smith Island @ 915. @ 930 we started hearing a rumbling sound. It was a very clear, sunny day with one or two small clouds.

The water was like glass - no swells or wind.

The rumbling sound became louder and louder, seemingly emanating from the South/Southwest. We looked around for any aircraft overhead but saw nothing - not even a contrail.

The rumbling turned into a deafening, thunderous roar - the sound slowly moved from the South/Southwest to the North/Northwest and eventually died back down as quickly as it came - the whole thing lasting about 6 minutes. It was so loud at one point I could feel the roaring/thundering sound within my body.

I remember telling the Captain I expected to see a wall of water coming from the West. The Captain had 4 years experience in these waters and was adimant that he had never heard anything like it before.

We never saw an aircraft or contrail. The next thing that came to mind was possibly a meteor but given the deafening roar and how long it lasted we should have seen something. The consensus on the boat was some kind of hypersonic experimental military craft or a UFO. I was considering the timing - memorial day weekend - and wondering why the military would be operating on a Saturday over memorial day weekend over the skies of Prince Williams Sound.

This is the first time it's occured to me to report it to somebody. Event occurred May 29th (Saturday) 2010.
