Flying craft with orange flames underneath

9/21/2012 Between 7:05 p.m. and 9:25 p.m.

Salvo, NC

My wife and I were walking our dog northbound on Colony Drive when we noticed an airborne craft coming toward us from the direction of Norfolk. Its light was orange, and was larger than normal for an airplane. The craft was flying slowly at a low altitude, so we initially thought it was a helicopter. However, after two or three minutes, as it neared us, it appeared to be circular, approximately 25 ft in diameter with two lines of fire underneath, and as it passed silently overhead, I thought it was an FA-18 from Oceanna NAS that was in trouble. It flew farther south for a couple of minutes when the fire appeared to flicker out as when you turn off the gas on a grill, and the craft, by then just a dot in the sky, accelerated away at high speed. Almost immediately after the first craft passed by, a second identical craft flew over silently as the first had done. This one flew south, then slightly southeast toward the ocean, and dropped down in altitude below the line of sight.

We went back to the house, and at about 8:00 p.m. my wife, daughter and I were on the deck when we saw a loose cluster of about ten identical craft coming from the north. These flickered out one-by-one, and sped off in different directions.

At about 9:00 p.m. we saw a very precise formation of eight identical craft coming from the north. This formation was like a check mark with the check at the north end. These were a precise distance from craft to craft, moving slowly as before, and at a similar altitude. At one point, the lead craft suddenly reversed direction and flew to the rear of the formation. This was an immediate reversal, not a maneuver. One by one these craft flickered out and disappeared.
