fire lights over hwy 72 near Athens Albama

Strange fire lights over 12 total were flying over hwy 72 just east of city of Athens. cars were slowing down glaring at these strange "fire lights" flying from north to south about 5 miles of athens near isoms orchards. no formations but were gaining altitude as me and my daughter were trying to figure out what these were. was not helicopter or plane. japanese lanters is a possiblility but that is guessing on my part.
