a quarter size ball of light

My brother inlaw and i were sitting on my balcony talking facing N.W when we saw this huge ball of light shoot down then curved up like the letter 'J' then disappeared it moved so fast that it only lasted about 2 seconds this was definitely not a shooting star it looked like it came in from out of space then swooped down really fast then swooped up then the light vanished now i have seen something similar to this about 13-14 years ago when I was in Australia there were no lights flashing no other colors just a huge ball of light. I cant tell how far it was away from us but it looked like it was about the size of a quarter
