twin tails, changed trajectory

Noticed a short, wedged shaped contrail in the s.w. sky. I thought it looked "wrong", as it appeared to be vertical in the sky rather than running horizontally as you would expect from an airplane moving through the sky. I grabbed my field glasses and was able to focus in on the object, a sphere shaped gray rock with what looked like ice crystals on the surface. The contrail was actually a twin tailed gaseous substance coming off the backside of the object. These tails appeared to swirl and "boil". The object was moving so slowly and was so low in the sky that all three of us were able to track it as it moved across the sky sharing the field glasses between us. It changed trajectory twice. The first was a change in altitude and the second was when it turned towards us and we could see it head on. This view showed a round ball of roiling fire. We watched it until we couldn't anymore. This object appeared as what one would think an art! ist rendition of a comet would look like as it moved through space. Except it wasn't outer space. It was thousands of feet lower than a passenger jet that was flying overhead and just to the north at the same time as the object in the sky. Because of the incredible detail we saw with field glasses and the extremely slow movement across the sky, we are having a time trying to wrap our brains around what we witnessed.
