Three white-yellowish lights, and one red light, in flying in a stretched out triangular formation, No Solid craft seen - transparent.

Northern Wilmington, in the Porters Neck/Figure 8 area.

Three white-yellowish lights and one red light in flying in a stretched out triangular formation. Thought it was an airplane at first but the lights were moving very, very slow, almost hovering and were traveling in the direction of where my dad and I were, towards the house.

Guessing when we first spotted them they were about a mile out, and it took a long time to approach where we were. We were outside sitting on a deck (uncovered) and the lights were not near the ground at all, but not quite airplane altitude - close enough to know they were not floating lanterns. When they got very close they flew (high) overhead but it was quiet, and was not an aircraft.

Looking up you could still see the stars in-between the pattern of the lights - no shadow like you would see with a low-flying plane at night. It was very eerie - did not know what to make of it. I have never seen anything so bizarre and fascinating in my life. Had I not seen that there was transparency between the lights and stars, I would have just thought it was military related since that area isn't too far away from the base.
