Bright lights behind me hwy 101, I thought I was being pulled over at first

It was the day before Thanksgiving, the year 2000. I was moving back to Arizona from Coos Bay and took highway 101 south to California, so driving several hours around 8 or 9pm. I remember being very tired and emotional having failed at moving away from everything I knew. My boyfriend lay passed out on the passenger seat, the stereo blasting loud as I tried not to think. I remember feeling the dark and being very aware I hadn't seen any cars in either direction for some time. I felt very exposed and lonely for reasons I cant explain. Suddenly, I looked in my rearview mirror and thought, how the heck did anyone sneak up on me so fast? The lights became really close and they flashed quickly, I began to pull over thinking I was getting pulled over by a highway patrol, feeling that same fear of what did I do wrong? As I slowed down to stop my boyfriend woke up, asking me what what going on? I said I'm getting pulled over, I don't know why, I didnt do anything.. ! He looks behind the car and looks back at me like I've lost my mind. He says, Kelly quit screwing around, there's no cop back there. To my shock, I turned around and he was right, nothing!! I claimed that my eyes were playing tricks on me because I felt so stupid, but I know for a fact, something had been right behind me and disappeared into thin air. It's been 20 years ago and I still wonder and wish I had investigated further.
