NUFORC Sighting 17564

Occurred: 2000-07-31 23:00 Local
Reported: 2001-05-09 00:00 Pacific
Duration: 5 sec
No of observers: 4

Location: Crescent Bar, WA, USA

Shape: Fireball

While talking with friends and looking for satelites overhead 4 people witnessed an explosion that was half the size of the moon in the southren skies from our location. It lit the countryside with a glow that you could read a newspaper by. It looked very similar to an explosion on a massive scale. It appeared in the direction of the Yakima firing range but was to far up in the sky to appear to be from the military. There was no sound and it appeared very far away. Our possible explanation would be a meteror exploded while entering the atmoshphere or possibly a large satelite falling from orbit.
