a star making zig-zag

My family and I were in Auckland-New Zealand to live for a year or so. Just in the 5th day we were in a lodge and suddenly my wife shouted and said: "Look, a star is moving in the sky!". I get out home and hardly believed what I was seeing: something shining like a star was moving very fast and making sharp movements like a zig-zag and sudenly vanished in the sky. The color and size were the same of stars but such movements no known aircraft can perform!. It lasted about 10 seconds, We had never seen such a thing before.
