moving eas to west, looked like a superbright meteor, ball of fire, melted away suddenly, fairly slow moving

I'm retired Business Exec.On or about Feb. 12, 2003, I was watching the 10:00-news on TV. Dog tipped over the garbage can..I went out to investigate and started picking up the trash. It was about 10:15 at night and suddenly my whole yard was lit up. I looked up and turned around to see a ball of fire fairly slow moving from east to west. I lasted about 10-12 seconds and then broke up and disappeard. From where I stood it appeard to be about the size of a basketball and made a soft whooshing noise. It never hit the ground and it just dissapeard and broke in to several smaller peices.
