A large, triangular object with two banks of very large, bright white lights on the front two sides, hovering motionless near I-435.

Driving home from the Kansas City International Airport at approximately 00:45 Wednesday morning, February 14, I saw a large, bright object hovering over a field area near the northbound lane of I-435. I was headed southbound on I-435, about 2 miles south of I-29, and at first I assumed this was a landing plane. It was much brighter than a plane, however, and it was "pointed" due north rather than east/northeast, which is the direction of the airport from this freeway. As I drove nearer, I realized that the object was not moving. I slowed down to about 45 mph to get as close a look as possible from my driver’s side window. The object was triangular in shape, with banks of very large, bright white lights across the "front" two sides. There were two other colored lights, I believe red and blue, which were smaller and near the points. The triangular shape was very well defined from the bottom, and in the dark in looked to be a grayish/metallic color. I continued to watch as I drove by, and the object remained in place.

I was so alarmed and curious that I considered calling the police, but I didn’t know the name of the county I was in and dropped that idea. I also considered pulling over and getting a better look, but it was an extremely cold night and I didn’t feel safe stopping on the side of the freeway. I did call my husband to describe the experience to him.

I am an extensively published nonfiction writer and adjunct lecturer in English at a university in Kansas.
