I was on this flight last Friday evening and approximately 20 minutes after flying over Chicago I watched some lights in the sky I could not explain. I estimated my location to be over either Indiana or Ohio.

I was sitting on the left side of the plane, the sky was clear and we were traveling over what looked to be countryside with a spattering of small towns as indicated by lights from the towns and darkness in the countryside.

While looking out the window I saw 3 round lights down near the ground. We were at cruising altitude, over 30,000’ but I don’t know the exact altitude.

The lights were low near the ground, and I would guess them to be a half mile above ground.

At first, I thought they were spotlights coming from the ground, but there was no beam coming up or source of the light. I then thought it must be light from above, like some type of aircraft shining lights down, but there were no other marked lights as a source of the lights above the lights, just the lights themselves.

The lights were moving in a circular pattern and never stopped. There were a maximum of three, and they would merge into one or two, and then split back into three. They did this nonstop while maintaining a rotating pattern I estimated to cover 20 miles.

The lights did not appear to have any mass to them, just glowing disks of light. They were not evenly illuminated, and never changed color, nor did they illuminate anything but themselves.

I watched them the entire time the plane passed over them, and they never left the area. I watched until the plane was too far downrange for me to see them.

The passengers behind and in front of me had their blinds closed, so I didn’t say anything to them.
