Strange Light Observed over Santa Monica Bay

On 9/25/2010 at approximately 9:45 PM my wife and I observed a very strange light over Santa Monica Bay from the Palos Verdes Peninsula. We were admiring the lights of the bay from near Malaga Cove when we noticed a bright orange light coming toward us (but to the west) from the direction of Malibu. The orange light was constant and not blinking. Behind the light was a tail similar to a meteorite, but the object was not traveling nearly as fast as a meteorite would.

After about three seconds, a red light came out from the rear of the object and disappeared. Then the tail waned and the light dimmed and then went out completely. Within one second, the light re-emerged with a large puff of smoke that was visible in the moonlight. The light then accelerated and disappeared after approximately three seconds
