Reported: 2010-09-28 13:08 Pacific
Duration: 40 minutes
No of observers: 1

Location: Albuquerque, NM, USA

Shape: Light

On a clear cloudless summer afternoon in the summer of 2000, I was hiking alone in the Sandia Mountains just east of Albuquerque, NM. I had just climbed a steep hill, and decided to rest on my back on top of a large flat rock. It was around 3 p.m. in the afternoon, and the moon was about one-third of the way between straight up and the western horizon.

I was watching military jets as they raced across the sky leaving vapor trails behind them.

I then spotted a bright light, similar to the planet Venus, moving eastward at a speed similar to the jet aircraft. I assumed that it was another jet much higher up, and the sunlight was glinting off it. It was not leaving any vapor trail. As it passed almost straight above me, it started making a sharp arc of 90 degrees (about the same radius as the moon), and simultaneously coming to a complete stop. I kept watching it, but after about 20 minutes, it was noticeably starting to slowly fade, but still not moving again. After 10 more minutes, it had completely faded away, and I could no longer see it.
