At about 10:00PM on December 17th, 2011, two colleagues and I witnessed what we believe to be two UFOs fly from the western horizon to the eastern horizon within a time span of 3-5 seconds.

That day we (and others) had been working on a coastal research project, setting up radar antennas on the dunes between Fort Caswell and the southern beach line. During the day we noticed military activity many miles south-southeast of the beach, where we could see and hear naval ships firing artillery. Around noon we also watched as two jets soared overhead, to and from the ocean, turning and banking as jets do. (We have no knowledge of a connection between the military activity and the sighting.)

Later that night, after we finished work and had had dinner, my two colleagues and I decided to explore the old fort where we were staying. After roaming around for about 40 minutes, we walked onto a broad patch of lawn behind one of the structures where we stood and talked for at least half an hour.

Just before the sighting occurred, we were discussing the constellations and were aiming my iPhone into the sky, using the SkyView app to reveal star names and constellations. At about 10:00PM while all three of us were simultaneously staring upward, we noticed two bright (but small) lights appear from the western horizon, swiftly cross the sky, and fade away into the eastern horizon. They were moving at a very rapid pace, one light following the other’s path at the same speed. It appeared as though they were very high up in the night sky.

There was no noise that could be heard, and they simply looked like two points of solid light following each other. My colleagues and I are geologists and marine scientists. We have seen our fair share of planes, shooting stars, jets, helicopters, satellites, and bugs, and what we saw was none of these. Immediately after acknowledging that we all three saw the two lights, we agreed that they could have been none of those things, based on their apparent altitude, speed, as well as the lack of sound.

I myself have always been a UFO enthusiast, and in my 22 years of living I had never seen anything that I would confidently call a UFO, until that night.
