Characteristics: Aura or haze around object

A graduated cylinder of light, much like a tentacle, gradually getting thinner, with sections that had different characteristics. Starting at the thick end it appeared to have ribbing. It appeared to be a long cloud. But as I looked at it, I started to notice it had a 3 dimensional structure and it seemed to be stationary over our neighborhood. It was a white cloudy color shining under the moonlight and appeared to be .5-1.5 miles in length. Went in for 15 minutes came back out to see if it was still there, It was completely gone. it had 5 or 6 different see-thru sections with various shapes like a leg or tentacle getting smaller and fading at the end.

I am a retired military AirCrewman.
