Red lights seen twice on same night

While watching fireworks in Vancouver I noticed a non-blinking red light extremely high in the sky traveling quickly from NW to SE. I had my girlfriend look and she also stated it was bright red and wasn't blinking. There were a couple of commercial jets also visible at very high altitude and you could clearly see white blinking lights on them. As we were watching it, it blinked out and was gone.

Approximately one hour later four of us were heading home and were traveling south and had just crossed the Willamette river when I noticed what looked to me like three bright red balls all connected in a triangular shape. This object was to our right towards the city of Portland and was very low. It also appeared to be extremely large. Three of the four of us were looking at it when it simply vanished. A few moments later, I looked back and it had reappeared but then we lost it due to the trees and terrain.
