Strange airborne lights, observed by 10 middle-aged friends

We had a picnic for 10 people at our house in Greece, September 5, 2009. At about 8:30, the guys called the women to come outside to see the strange lights in the sky. The first bunch were clustered in groups of 3 or 4. They were traveling from south to north as we looked to the west. After they went out of view because of nearby trees, we didn't see them anymore and surmised that they turned and headed west.

After the first two bunches, the remaining 4 or so came individually and well-spaced out. Some of these were moving more quickly than the earlier ones. The best way to describe them is they were close to earth and larger than an airplane, and there was only one large "light" or "glow" per unit. They looked like they could be hot air balloons, but we couldn't see any balloon envelopes and they wouldn't fly that late. They were also flying in too straight of a line, and they made no sound at all.
