UFO chased by Fighter Jets

I couldnt enter a date because this happened in 77 or 78 aboard the USS Midway.It was night time on the flightdeck of the Midway and all was quiet when myself and a few friends and who knows how many countless others noticed and object in the sky blinking red,orange and green silently about 1/4 mile out and above the ship.We stared at it for about 3 minutes when all of a sudden the air boss came over the speaker shouting, launch the alert 5
Which meant we had 5 minutes to get 2 fighter jets in the air. Well we launched them and they did a complete 180 turn and headed up and back towards the lights with afterburners ablazing. It seemed like as soon as the Jets got close the lights would zip to another location> It kept doing this in different directions each time the jets got close.It made these 2 fighter jets look slow and cumbersome.This cat and mouse game lasted for about 15 or twenty minutes until whatever it was just zipped out of sight.The jets stayed up awhile longer and landed back on the Carrier and after everything had quieted down the Captain came over the Ship's speaker and said : those of you on the Flightdeck have just experienced what they call a UFO : That next morning the USS Midway's newspaper had a picture of the thing and the circumstances behind it.
