low vapor sound in sky, accompanied ground rumbling

I was standing outside my house. I heard a low, vapor sounding noise. It was accompanied by the ground rumbling under my feet. But, NO visible object seen. Minutes later, helicopters were circling the direction I heard the noise heading to (North).
