Orange fireball in sky; not moving; observed for 5 minutes; left and came back 4-5 minutes later and it was gone!

My 15 year old son came out of his bedroom to report to us he saw an unusual orange light glowing in the sky. At first, he thought it was a fire on a nearby hill. We went outside to view it and it appeared to be an extremely bright star at first, glowing orange - then upon closer inspection it appeared to be on fire. It is a completely clear night with a heavy freeze warning tonight.

We walked away to do a quick search online to see which star or planet it may be - and less than 5 minutes later we returned and it was gone. It's no longer there! I didn't expect that. I thought it would have just moved higher in the sky, but it's completely gone. It was NOT moving when we witnessed it. It looked like it was 30,000 feet in the air or even higher (which is why we thought maybe a star/planet) but it was in the southern sky and no visible planets are there this month. Also, it was not a plane as it didn't appear to be moving and we watched it for a good 4-! 5 minutes straight.
