Fireball observed on Lake Burton, GA

Several (approximately 5) extremely learned individuals, myself included, were occupying a boat on Lake Burton in Rabun County, GA, (approximately 90 miles north of Atlanta) at approximately 10 pm on the evening of 8/16/13. All of us are very conservative and are extreme skeptics.

We were on vacation in the area. Most of the dwellings in the area are occupied only during peak vacation season. The area was sparsely occupied on the weekend in question.

Our watercraft was the only watercraft on the lake at the time. The man-made lake is beautiful and contains several small artificially constructed islands, on which multi-million dollar homes are situated.

As we traversed the lake the three of us sitting at the rear of the boat observed a slow-moving glowing object in the sky. The object was red in color and looked like a large fireball. It was hovering at a height of approximately 75 feet, above one of the islands, not 400 yards from us. It appeared to be moving at a very slow smooth speed.

As soon as we saw the object we each commented on it, none of us able to comprehend what we had just seen. The operator of our boat did not see the object and he continued driving in the direction in which we had been traveling. We excitedly notified him of what we had seen and he slowed the boat.

We were now on the opposite side of the island from where we had seen the object. The trees on the island precluded us from observing the object. The driver maneuvered the boat further from the island, to a point were we should have been able to see the object over the trees. It was gone.

The entire time that had elapsed between when we lost sight of the fireball and when we should have been able to see it again was less than one minute. Other than the trees on the island there were no other objects which could have blocked our view of any area on the lake. There was partial cloud-cover, but several stars were visible in the night.

We traveled back to the other side of the island in an attempt to locate the object, but it was gone. It could have gone no where but up and/or away from us. None of us were able to get pictures or video of the fireball.

I was encouraged to report this incident after hearing the director of this website on Coast to Coast AM, which I listen to at work- admittedly for the entertainment factor.

Although the occupants of the boat are among the most intelligent men I know, none of us have an explanation for what we saw.
