Fiery/pulsing circular object about 2000 feet up that became round ringed with red.

Driving north on rt 100 near Foxfire restaurant we saw a fiery/pulsing object in sky about 2000 ft up. Determined was not aircraft on fire. Object became round ringed with red. We had pulled off road to watch. It then quickly moved up and away. Have never seen anything similar.
