Three small starlike objects in a perfect triangle, each one higher than the other and moving strangely - definitely not satellite

Im a college student, and my roommate and I like to stargaze in the country. Neither of us believe in aliens and were only looking for shooting stars. We both noticed one star that was moving, and assumed it was a plane or satellite. This object started to move in shapes, some of which seemed like letters to us - we saw a deliberate M shape, an S and etc. We watched it for an hour wondering if we were seeing things, and looking at other stars to make sure it was actually moving in relation to them (which it was). We then noticed two fainter starlike objects very close to the main one, seemingly higher in the sky, making a perfect isosceles triangle. All three would move in strange jerky ways, unlike a satellite or plane. None of them moved very far from the original spots, and after making shapes, would return to their original positions. We have no idea what could be doing this and decided to report. All objects looked high enough to be outside the atmosphere, and several planes flew under them. They were white and generally just looked like stars, but twinkled more frequently.
