Large set of lights, probably one craft, similar to something from CE of the 3rd kind

Sighting occurred appx 4am in the last week of August 1999. I was staying with a friend who lived in my neighborhood at the time. We were sky watching and something caught our eyes, a set of lights in the northern part of the sky that looked to be a single craft. The lights were various colors, mostly what I would call jewel tones, or showing the spectrum of the colors of the rainbow. Some of these colors appeared to possibly be changing or rotating through colors quickly, maybe a few dozen individual lights in the rough shape of an oval. The object hovered in one place and the sighting lasted for about 20 seconds and it shot of vertically and also quickly faded like maybe it was cloaking. As any FYI--weather was calm, sky was clear, no wind, no other objects in the sky, no sound coming from the object. Its size was indeterminate as well as distance, as it was a night sighting without anything nearby to compare it to (my guess is an object a few dozen yards across at approximately few hundred feet above the ground). My friend and I were noticeably shaken by the event, as it gave us both a chill all the way down our spines. I had seen other objects before this event and since then, but none as memorable.
